Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated on October 31 until November 2. The holiday has been passed from our ancestors as a time to honor our loved ones who have left the mortal world. This is a beautiful tradition that I want my children to understand and take part in.

At a recent shopping trip to Walmart, I picked up these fun BUTTERFINGER® Peanut Butter Cups Skulls located in the candy aisle. They are the ideal topper for my Calavera Cup recipe. My kids will love the skull shape of the candy and as a mom I love that they have no artificial flavors or colors. Food is an important part of spending time with my family. Making these Calavera Cups with my daughters is the perfect opportunity to have a conversation about Día De Los Muertos traditions and remember loved ones.

One of the most beautiful traditions of Día De Los Muertos is the altar, elaborate creations to celebrate those family members who have left the mortal world. Creating the altar is a wonderful time to share stories about their lives and special memories. To create your altar, start with pictures of loved ones you want to remember. Marigold flowers are the traditionally placed on altars along with candles. You can also place a few of their favorite things they enjoyed.

When we remember our lost loved ones it is as if they are still here with us now. Our daughters hear so many stories about their Papa Marin who had passed away before they were born. They know that he is their abuelito and while they have never met him I think they feel his presence in some way through the happy memories shared.

Día De Los Muertos is a time when families have celebrations in their home serving homemade food and eating candies shaped like skeletons. Nestlé has items that make your celebrations special, pick up some BUTTERFINGER® Peanut Butter Cups Skulls to make Calavera Cups for Día De Los Muertos with your family.

Follow the package instructions to make the pudding.

DDLMPudding

While pudding is setting in the fridge, begin to make the “dirt” by grinding the cookies into crumbs. Place cookies in a large sealed plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin.

DDLMDirt

Begin to fill cups with pudding and crushed cookies.  First layer will be two tablespoons of pudding followed by two teaspoons of crushed cookies. Continue this process until you fill with the last layer being the crushed cookie.
