Those of us who are lucky to live near a Trader Joe’s can quickly drop in and easily shop for low-priced yet quality foods, beverages and even botanically based skincare. Since the beginning of 2020, saving money has never been more important, and reading the ingredients of skincare helps avoid paying for a list of water, binders and fillers, and even prevent paying for prestige and brand-name packaging.

Over-40 skin is unique since many still fall into the combination category, so balancing the pH is just as crucial as preventing and repairing. Below are some ideal picks for maintaining both healthy skin and sound budget.

Ultra-Hydrating Gel Moisturizer with Aloe and Green Tea Extract ($8.99)

Just like we have our winter clothing staples (boots, long-sleeved tops), we need to switch out our skincare during the hot summer days and nights. This moisturizer relies on sodium hyaluronate to bind moisture to skin without clogging pores. A blend of skin-friendly oils, including coconut and sunflower seed, give just enough slip minus any tacky, sticky feeling, making this ideal to use under make-up.

Rose Water Facial Toner ($3.99)

Rosewater + witch hazel + glycerin = an after-cleansing toner that brightens and purifies without over-drying or stripping. Works double-duty as a refreshing face and body mist throughout the day (best if placed in the refrigerator)

Rose Facial Oil ($5.99)

Face oils are intuitive: they read an individual’s skin to hydrate and control oil as needed. Rose hip is high in vitamin C and paired with another antioxidant powerhouse, vitamin E. Ten naturally derived oils, including macadamia, kukui seed and sea buckthorn, mean this formula can be used day and night under your favorite moisturizer. Bonus: this oil can be mixed along with dry or chalky-textured cosmetics, such as solid concealers.

Coconut Body Butter ($5.49)

Lightly whipped, fast absorbing and with a mild, tropical scent reminiscent of your favorite beach sunscreen as a kid. This formula mixes vitamin E, shea butter and aloe vera and is ideal for individuals with eczema and dry, rough patches.

Duplicate = The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter ($21)
