The “The Fabric of Life” mural in San Juan Bautista, CA, is a stop worth taking off the beaten path. It is located on the corner of Washington and 7th Streets.
The artwork was part of the Clean California Initiative funded by Caltrans and unveiled in December 2023. Artists Ryan Sarfati and Eric Skotnes, also known as Yanoe x Zoueh, were selected to bring this vision to life. According to BenitoLink, the two artists began as graffiti artists, and this project brought them back to their roots.
The artwork was inspired by the cultural, environmental and history of San Juan Bautista.
The mural on the west side of the underpass is a tribute to the city’s El Teatro Campesino, including Teatro veteran Alejandro Gomez, who performs under the name Flaco el Jandro, holding a guitar and in three-quarter profile.
The image below represents the local ranching history using images of the owners of San Juan’s Morris Grassfed Beef.
To fully appreciate the artwork, you must walk under the underpass because you feel like you are walking in the art.
If you are planning a trip to San Juan Bautista, don’t miss out on seeing this beautiful gem in person.
