We are so excited that our beloved “Queen of Salsa,” the iconic Cuban-American singer and cultural legend, Celia Cruz, will be featured on the fourth coin of the 2024 American Women Quarters (AWQ) Program.
Cruz, known for her vibrant performances and influential music, earned widespread acclaim and numerous accolades throughout her career, including four Latin Grammy awards, the National Medal of Arts, and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy. Her impact went beyond music, empowering Afro-Latino Americans to embrace their heritage and culture with pride.
Designed and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill, the coin captures the dynamic essence of Celia Cruz, showcasing her radiant smile and iconic rumba style dress on the reverse side. Her famous catchphrase, “¡AZÚCAR!” is prominently inscribed, symbolizing the joy and energy she brought to audiences worldwide.
Through the AWQ program, the Mint aims to honor a diverse group of accomplished American women whose contributions have shaped history across various fields. Other pioneering women featured in the program include Maya Angelou, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Amy Way Wong to name a few.
As Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson aptly stated, “Celia Cruz’s influence reached well beyond her music, making her an important and enduring cultural icon.” This coin serves as a fitting tribute to her remarkable life and serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by women throughout history.
