San Jose Museum of Art (SJMOA), ArtRage Thursday, November 15, 2012, 7pm-10pm
SJMOA hosted one in a regular series of ArtRage nights on Thursday, Nov. 15 2012 from 7pm-10pm. The night started out with live music from the band The Next Wednesday Band, who played 80’s and 90’s cover songs such as REM’s “Drvier 8” and “The One I Love” and Oasis’ “Live Forever” and “Wonderwall”.
Visitors were then allowed to explore the museum after hours and enjoy exhibits such as “Dive Deep: Eric Fischl”, the main attraction @ the SJMOA on the first level. Some of his more stand-out works include “Untitled: The Prices (Richard, Judy, Annie and Gen), an oil on linen (2008) based on a series of pics of the Price family poolside in their backyard, and “Once Where We Looked to Put Down Our Dead” (1996), another oil on linen based on pics by Thomas Eakins (1844-1916). Currently on exhibit on the second level are “Telling Fortunes ” by Ranu Mukarjee (through January 13, 2013), “Local Color” (through January 13, 2013) and “Raging Opulence” by Mark Dean Veca (through March 31, 2013). Some standout works from the three include:
- Mukherjee’s hybrid film titiled “Nearing and Viewing” (2012), from the series “Beta Space”. “Nearing and Viewing” is a video collage which features, among other objects. honeybees, roses, an iPad, mop, cash register and macaws.
- From “Local Color”, a piece from artist Markus Linnenbrink titled “No Body Wins Who Fights Here” (2009), an epoxy resin and pigment on wood that resembles a Chinese checkers board game.
Another feature of ArtRage is the DIY Crafts Table on the Second Level, which allows visitors to explore their creative side. The night’s DIY theme was moustache glasses.
The night ventured on with the Stanford College music group called Cardinal Calypso, thirteen college-aged students who play the steel drums. They played upbeat songs such as “Shake Senora”, “Africa” and a current popular song from Of Monsters and Men called “Little Talks”, all the while having fun with each other.
