As a parent we play many roles in our children’s lives to prepare them for their future. One of the most important foundations we can do to prepare our children for a successful future is to prepare, plan and pay for their college education. As a mother of two under the age of three, college seems so far away but I know that it will be here before I know it. And even though I may be caught up in diaper duty and preschool activities right now I know that in the future my girls will be college bound one day. Right now I already worry about the rising cost of college education and how difficult it is to get into college. I can only imagine how stressful it can be when you are going through the process to send your child off to college. One resource available to help parents navigate the college application process and access information is HSF.net.
The website offers a wealth of resources including:
- A step by step program for parents to follow as they get ready for college.
- Information regarding financial aid.
- Scholarships
- Programs including workshops, special events, and college retention programs
- Mentorships
- Academic Support
- And much more (in English and Spanish)
It is exciting to know that more Hispanic children are going to college than ever before. Hispanic students ages 18-24 account for 19% of all college students. That is a significant increase from the 12% in 2008. And now 69% of Hispanic high school graduates are going directly to college which is a higher rate than the general population. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund wants to keep increasing these stats by providing parents with the support they need to guide their children through the application, enrollment and financial aspect of pursuing a higher education.
If you are a parent of a high school student visit HSF to learn about how you can prepare for your college bound child. And remember scholarship season runs from January 1 to March 30, so start the process now to be prepared.
