Halloween is one of the best times for my daughters from dressing up in their favorite character, the Halloween parade at school, and Trick or Treating to get a bag full of candy. Like many other children, my kids were so sad that their favorite Halloween activities are postponed this year due to the pandemic. I wanted to do something fun for them during this time, so we decided to do a Zoom party with their friends.
My children attend a dual immersion school, and during this time we would be making altars to display in the hallways and preparing for the school’s annual Día de los Muertos festivities. My kids love Día de los Muertos and they decided to throw a Día de los Muertos virtual party.
Día de Los Muertos con los Amigos
To plan the event, my girls picked their favorite Evite card pictured above, we set up a Zoom call and we created party bags full of all the goodies that we plan to drop off at their friends’ homes. We filled the bags with candy, a craft activity, a glow stick, and a Loteria game card. We also added a glow stick, Día de Los Muertos skull tattoo and skull ring pop.
The Día de los Muertos con Los Amigos Zoom festivities will begin with storytelling of a Día de Los Muertos themed book. My daughters picked one of their favorite books, Rosita y Conchita by Eric Gonzalez & Erich Haeger.
The book Rosita y Conchita tells the story of little Conchita as she celebrates the life of her deceased sister by setting up a memorial altar on the Day of the Dead. Rosita y Conchita is his heartfelt story with bilingual rhymes and colorful illustrations.
Following the reading of the book, we will begin making a craft. There are so many crafts that you can select from, and I decided to purchase a simple shrine craft that could easily be mailed and required only markers for guests to finish the craft.
We are ending the party with a fun game of Loteria. I made copies of the game cards to include them in each party bag.
My girls were so excited packing the party bags that they wanted to do their Día de los Muertos make-up afterwards. We will do our make-up for the actual party and invite our guests to come with their best Día de los Muertos make-up as well.
We are also going to host a Día de los Muertos party for their Girl Scout Troop where we will incorporate more learning components into the program. They can’t wait!
