Having a Dog = Happiness

After my daughter’s Google Class meet, she came running up to tell me the news that her friend Caroline was getting “quarantine” puppy. It seems like the perfect time to introduce a four-legged new family member to the family with everyone staying at home. And this seems to be the case for many during this coronavirus pandemic and for a good reason. Besides unconditional love, owning a dog can improve your life in so many ways.

Many have flocked to animal shelters across Southern California to adopt or foster as they seek to fill up extra hours amid stay-at-home orders. Adoption demands were so high, the Riverside County animal shelter is now empty.

Before my two daughters were born, I had my two beloved Boston Terriers, Roxy, and Chloe. After they passed away, I could not even imagine having another dog or having the capacity to take care of a dog while caring for my two young daughters. As my daughters grew older, they kept asking for a dog. I offered up every excuse in the book to deter their daily requests for a dog. I even hid behind the fact that her little sister was allergic to cats and dogs, and for a while, that seemed to stop her from asking.

I eventually caved in, and Coco, a cute Shitzu and Poodle mix, entered our lives. We all fell completely in love with her at first sight. I can now say that I can’t see our home without our little Coco. And don’t get me wrong there are more expenses I would say we spend more on Coco’s grooming appointment than my hair. There is more work; despite a few months of potty training, Coco still pees inside on a pee pad. But in the end, we can’t see our lives without Coco!

Here are five ways that having a dog will positively change your life

Dogs are good for your heart

Studies show that pet owners are linked to having lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, and decreased triglyceride levels, which help the overall health of the heart. So on top of filling your heart with love, dogs can improve overall cardiovascular health and reduce heart attacks.

Dogs relieve stress

You know that feeling when you curl up next to your pet, and everything that you are worried about seems to melt away. Well, there is science behind that proving that spending time with a dog increases the hormone oxytocin, otherwise known as the “love hormone.”

Dogs teach responsibility

A dog in the home is excellent to teach children the responsibility of another living being. Kids will participate in varying degrees and sometimes need a reminder to take care of the dog.

Dogs make the best of friends

I am sure everyone knows the saying “A dog is a man’s best friend” and that can’t be more true. A dog will always be there for you and, in my opinion, even knows when you are down. They are the perfect partner to snuggle up with to watch a movie or a walking buddy. And they never hold a grudge and are always there for you.

Dogs keep us active

Your dog will get you off the couch, reminding you to walk them regularly. Those daily walks will keep you and your dog healthy!

Visit your local animal shelters to adopt a fur baby. Here are few resources in Northern California to consider adopting a pet from or making a donation to. These organizations also have resources for vaccinations, neutering, training and more.
