As a member of the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley (LCSV) one of the events that I always look forward to attending is the annual Sisterhood Brunch. The brunch is such a wonderful time to connect with fellow Latina leaders and community members. Former LCSV president, Jaqui Guzman served as the event MC and recalled that the earlier Sisterhood Brunches were held at a member’s backyard. The event overflowed with attendees and it is truly a testament as to how much the LCSV has grown over the years.
This year the keynote speaker was Irene Chavez, Sr. Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente. She shared her journey and a touching story about a young patient India who forever impacted her life. I was especially moved by the story and message that the present has no time because it’s gone in a second.
Long-time supporter and community advocate, Guisselle Nuñez received this year’s Sisterhood Award. Guisselle is the Director of Marketing, Public and Government Relations for Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, Alameda County and she is currently on the LCSV Advisory Board. In addition to her many community activities and leadership roles, she is actively involved with the ELLA program sharing her personal branding expertise and being there for the young Latinas as a role model and mentor. She is passionate to help her community and always willing to help others out.
The Future is Latina
ELLA Stephanie Soria Mendoza shared her powerful personal story growing up in East Palo Alto and how the ELLA program has impacted her. Stephanie shared a really strong quote during her speech “Some women are lost in the fire. Some women are built from it,” which resonated with all the women in the room. The annual Sisterhood Brunch truly captures how empowered women can empower women.
