I recently had the chance to interview producer Cheyann Montiel Reagan at the Silicon Valley Latino Leadership Summit where she shared OFf & RUNNING “Breaking Ground in Media” Documentary.
Cheyann is the creator, director and producer of the comedy web series “OFf & RUNNING”. The web series is a lighthearted comedy centered on the main character, Leia who is trying to find her purpose in the world so that that she may eventually find your forever job. The series was first started off as a TV pilot but soon developed into a web series. Cheyann created “Off & RUNNING” because she saw there was no one that looked liked her on television or was telling her story. In addition to producing the series, Cheyann stars as MARS, Leia’s roommate and along with the third character, Christian, the three friends embark on crazy adventures that end with valuable lessons about friends, family and adulthood.
What inspired you to write “OFf & RUNNING”?
As a writer and filmmaker, I’ve always been inspired by Saturday Night Live and the way they use comedy to confront major social issues. After I finished my first feature script, which was a historical thriller, I knew it was time to switch gears and create a comedy show that was positive, uplifting and that even my six-year-old daughter could watch. The story of Leia’s search for her “forever” job and being hopeful for a sustainable career in this state of a recession is why this show is so important. This show will inspire people to find their purpose in life and recapture the American spirit.
Are there any similarities with the main character, Leia and your early experiences trying to find the forever job?
Leia was definitely inspired by my beginnings in the job market. My first job graduating high school was at a movie theater and later as a waitress at the local diner. As a waitress going through college, I got to meet a lot of people and their families and hear their stories about everyday life. It was really amazing to get this insight into their personal lives, which has been great fuel for my future characters.
How has the audience reacted to “OFf & RUNNING”?
The audience that is attracted to “OFf & RUNNING” is a wide demographic, of young and old, big and small and all races. They absolutely love it and want to see more. They can’t wait to see what bigger production company or network will pick us up to give us a second season or a TV season. The audience is very smart, witty and humorous people who enjoy shows like The Office, Arrested Development and I Love Lucy.
What is your next project that you are working on?
I’m developing a high concept Sci-Fi project that will start pre-production this summer 2013. I also have a couple of feature scripts completed, which I’m currently shopping, as well as another series under development.
Do you have any advice for young Latinas trying to break in the film industry?
Take your time to discover yourself as an artist and do not be afraid to be different.
